Master of Fetish Photography Series: Helmut Newton

Helmut Newton is a that name speaks to me.   This photographer was a true visionary, a genius of subject.  He brought fetish to the mainstream through the pages of the fashion glossies we have become so addicted to.

If you do not know who Helmut Newton is, well, you should!  Born in 1920 in Berlin to Jewish parents, this unique photographer purchased his first camera at age 12.  His youth was filled with world traveling in escape from from world drama, where he took a job eventually as a portrait photographer in Singapore.  More turmoil followed as he was interned by British authorities in Singapore and sent to Australia, eventually becoming an Australian citizen and changing his name to Newton in 1946.

He soon married actress June Browne (who went on to become a photographer under the pseudonym ‘Alice Springs’).  In 1946, he also setup his first studio in a fashionable district and began work primarily on fashion photography.

Eventually, he moved on and left Australia for London.  Australian Vogue magazine commissioned him for a special photo spread in January 1956.  That job would land him a 1 year contract with British Vogue.  Before his contract ended, he left the magazine to move to Paris where he worked for French and German magazines, where he eventually settled and continued to work as a fashion photographer through the 1960′s.

Primarily working for French Vogue and Harper’s Bazzar, his style was marked by erotic and highly stylistic scenes.  These scenes often showed signs of fetishism and BDSM subtexts.  In the 1970′s, he had a heart attack, slowing his output but increasing his fame.  His 1980′s “Big Nudes” series was the pinnacle of his unique erotic mixed with city life style.  His skill as a photographer was nearly perfect by this time.

Helmut Newton also shot many photo spreads for Playboy magazine where those images would eventually sell at auction for thousands of dollars at Bohhams and Christies.

Near the end, Newton lived in the cities of Monte Carlo and Los Angeles.  He died in as a his car hit a wall in the driveway of the famous Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard.  His ashes are buried next to Marlene Dietrich in Berlin.

Now, go online and do a Google Image Search on Helmut Newton and see for yourself why he is a master of fetish photography!

The Sexy Photostream of Richard Knightly

Surfing around on Flickr today, I came across a new photographer from across the pond: Richard Knightly.

Richard is an emerging photographer in the super cool London Fetish scene.  He is one very talented (and lucky) man.  He is “in a relationship” with an amazing fetish model and has done work for the Rub Club in London.

His stream is full of sexy, well planned, and beautifully executed photos.  His processing methods are not notch!  Please have a look for your self on his photostream.  If you are Model Mayhem, have a look at his portfolio there too.

Don’t forget to visit his website for even more great photography from Richard Knightly.

Bettie Page – Inspirational Pin Up Model of All Time

Today I am writing about the lovely, ever so beautiful, and classic pin up: Betty Page.

I “met” Bettie Page as a teenager in books and on posters at Hot Topics and other pop culture locations.  At first site, I had become enthralled with her beauty.  I wanted look like her, I wanted to die my hair black, I wanted to wear sexy swimming suites.  In fact, I still want to look like her.

As an adult, I have learned a whole lot more about Bettie.  Her time as a pin up model and fetish model impacted her dramatically.  She was innocent and just loved the camera.  She was the definition of a model.  I wish I could have photographed her.

Today, our culture has Bettie Page mania.  The images of her that at one time inflamed the nation are now seen as every day and pop culture.  Bettie was smart and sweet, a very sexy girl next door.  Her form was killer, a real woman.  A woman with curves and weight, not a stick figure!

So today, lets sit back and celebrate our lovely inspiration of the day: Bettie Page and all of the other artists who, like me, have become enamored by this lovely little vixen.

The Fetish Factory and the 15-Year Anniversary Fetish Weekend

I have always had an interest in Fetish as an art form and as a lifestyle. I have spent time visiting shops around the globe and online in the search for latex and vinyl fashions. I adore the way latex and vinyl look and feel.

A few years back, I came across The Fetish Factory in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on a search for latex clothing. What I found was a whole lot more than an online store. I found a new community and a whole new way to party.

The Fetish Factory is known for their three day no holds bar annual Anniversary Fetish Weekend. In it’s 15th year, this party is not to be missed. It is held this year over Memorial Day and tickets are still on sale! It is certainly one of those must do once before I die kind of things if you have any interest at all in fetish. No matter what your fetish – from the far fetched to the average – it is out in the open and okay here. I met so many interesting people and had such a good time, I highly advise attending if you can. In addition to the amazing yearly party, there are parties nearly every weekend with different themes.

Did I mention the store yet? Oh, well, the Fetish Factory Store is very fun. From clothing for both men and women as well as toys and even furniture, if it is fetish, it is at the store. The store is both online and physical in Ft. Lauderdale.

The Pin Up Files – A Constant Source of Inspiration

The Pin-Up Files Banner

The Pin-Up Files Banner

I am very much in love with viewing pin ups from the all eras, but most especially the 1950′s and 1960′s.  I feel like these images have something so special about them.

So where do you go for endless pin up inspiration?  Why the Pin-Up Files, of course!

This website has been around for many years and contains hundreds of galleries of pin up artists from around the globe from all different eras.  The galleries are arranged very simply – alphabetically by artist and split into 3 groups.

Some of my favorite galleries are:

The site also corresponds with a Yahoo Group that supports a community of like minded collectors and artists alike.
